Heading north on I-49 from Lafayette in about 10 miles you will come to Grand Coteau. With it's antique stores and electic shops, this small, historic town is a unique destination. The state historic marker notes that it developed around the Academy of Sacred Heart, founded in 1821, and St. Charles Jesuit College, founded in 1837. Many building are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The exit onto LA 93, also known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive or Main Street, will take you past the shops and buildings listed below. (Note: any phone numbers listed have an area code of 337.)
Former Mayor Gail Lark signed the Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement in 2007, taking an important step on the path of Grand Coteau becoming a "Cool City", joining over 1000 cities nationwide. Please notice the town's LED traffic signals.
